Read/delivered for Chat DMs

ice.d

Hello.

I have a suggestion.

When you DM someone you don’t know if’ they read it till they respond but sometimes it’s read but not something a user wishes to respond to yet.

So my question is once you send a chat message to another user (Chat DM’s) it has one check saying Delivered then once they open the chat it has two checks and says read so that way we know if it’s read or not by the user.

This can be helpful if you DM’ed a forum staff but havent responded at sometime now sometimes they may just click on chat then exit but mabye a setting like time-in-user-chat could have it set that a user must be on a user’s chat for N mins/secs/hrs before it’s considered read

I don’t like features like this. Being able to read a message and just making a mental note to reply later if I’m not in the position to reply at the moment is a lot better than feeling like I’m ignoring the person on the other end because they saw I read the message but didn’t reply. They are just annoying and I turn them off almost 100% of the time, so this would be a bad feature especially if it’s on a site level.

So essentially what You’re suggesting here is more of whatsapp (or telegram) like behaviour where the message states are indicated as checkboxes?

I see this being useful in some cases, even facebook used to support this on their chat. This behavior can be helpful to some communities especially the ones migrating from the likes of facebook groups.

However, this may not be a small change, and I would appreciate if there was a way to opt out on a per-user basis, the behavior can be identical to how something like whatsapp does it, if you have opted out of the state, you also don’t get to see the state when messaging others too.

I think we can have that sort of like an admin setting Rea-chats-enable/disable then you can enable or disable it?

I think a user setting is better as it allows users to opt in or out (essentially like Read Receipts on WhatsApp), instead of a sweeping site-wide setting.

Ok yeh i think that’s better idea and all users start on active then they can opt-out?
