}Review for quiz 3
We have our third quiz this Friday, October 30th. This problem sheet represents most of the types problems that will be on the quiz. You should absolutely study it fully and completely!
Problems
Figure 1 shows the graph of \(f(x) = 5x\,e^{-x}\) over the interval \([0,6]\). For that function
- Find the exact location of the absolute minimum.
- Find the exact location of the absolute maximum.
- Find the exact location of any other relative extremes.
- Find the exact location of any inflection points.
I’ve got 1000 meters of fence to build a corral. The corral will be partitioned into four pieces and built against an existing wall as shown in Figure 2. What is the maximal total area that I can enclose?
We’d like to generate a rational approximation to \(\sqrt{5}\). To do so, let \(f(x) = x^2 - 5\) and let \(x_0=1\). Then,
- Write down the corresponding Newton’d method iteration function for \(f\).
- Compute two Newton steps from \(x_0=1\).
